Exeter's Liberal Democrat PPC Graham Oakes has responded to HMRC loss of personal data.
"The head of the HMRC has done the honourable thing by resigning but where does the fault really lie? Information coming out of the HMRS point to problems beginning when Customs and the Inland Revenue were merged to form HMRC. This was seen as an opportunity to save money and as a result the combination of staff shortages in key areas and outdated IT systems has put our data at risk."
"Whilst one individual made the actual mistake the systemic problem is the responsibility of the Minister, he should resign as well."
"If the Chancellor will not accept responsibility for this total incompetence and do the honourable thing then you have to ask, how bad does a decision have to be for a minister to fall on his sword? Surely losing the largest amount of personal data in British history is bad enough?"
