Former Chair of resources on Devon County Council and Lib Dem PPC for Exeter graham Oakes has described Gordon Brown's response to the economic slow down as "too little, too late"
The Liberal Democrats have published their own package of proposals designed to help people left struggling by the credit crunch and Graham Oakes is backing it.
The Liberal Democrat measures include tax cuts for low and middle income households, stopping unnecessary repossessions, action to cut energy bills and moves to stop reckless banks jeopardising economic security.
Graham Oakes said: "Many people in Exeter are struggling to with rising bills, particularly of food and fuel. Many of them, particularly those reliant on their savings are worried and they look to the government to protect them, but what they get is too little, too late."
"The Tories don't offer any real hope either. They have been wrong on most of the major economic issues - including on Northern Rock. They were wrong to promise tax breaks for millionaires. Today, when faced with a deepening world financial crisis they responded by promising to freeze Council Tax for two years. What help will that be to people who have lost their homes and their jobs?"
"Its time to put money back into the local economy, this can be achieved by cutting taxes for those on low and middle incomes. "
"The Liberal Democrats have consistently called for action to cut energy bills, stop irresponsible behaviour by banks and deliver more help for those threatened with repossession. If Gordon Brown had acted when we first raised these issues we would not be in as deep a mess as we are."
