Exeter Lib Dems Decide

September 13, 2008 6:00 PM

Exeter Liberal Democrats held a meeting today to decide its stance on local government review;

The meeting was addressed by Philip Bostock, the Chief Executive of Exeter City Council who outlined the Exe Estuary bid that would see Exeter and Exmouth and surrounding areas forming a new unitary council with the remainder of Devon forming another.

Phil Norrey, the Chief Executive of Devon County Council outlined the alternative unitary bid that would see Devon forming a single authority.

Following a healthy debate local Lib Dems voted on the options including retaining the current two tier arrangements.

An overwhelming majority (64%) of members present supported the current two tier arrangements. However when asked to choose between the two options being considered by the Boundary Committee 53% supported the Exeter / Exmouth option, 41% supported the Unitary Devon option and 6% had no preference for either option.
