Graham Oakes, Liberal Democrat PPC for Exeter has welcomed the calling of the General Election on Thursday 6th May.
He said:
"This election is a chance for real change for Britain - not change for change's sake but real change that works. Only the Liberal Democrats can deliver that change.
"Over the next month, I'll be working hard to show how Lib Dem proposals will make Exeter fairer and even better place to live and work. I'll be explaining how we will increase funding for local schools, reducing class sizes and scrapping tuition fees to give every child a fair start in life. I will be explaining how raising the income tax threshold which would take the lowest earners out of tax, particularly helping low paid workers, students and pensioners with private pensions and savings. How this will save most people £700.
"I'll also talk about how we will clean up politics at Westminster.
"But I'll also be listening. I will be meeting a range of people, from the Chair of the RD&E hospital trust, to the University Vice Chancellor, to homeless people and I will be listening and learning about the challenges they face and how the government can help, rather than hinder them.
"Exeter will be one of the most interesting constituencies in the country as it has become a 3 way marginal since the last General Election. It usually returns an MP of the government of the day so with a hung parliament a distinct possibility it may well return a Lib Dem.
"The message time and again on the doorstep is that people feel let down by our Labour MP and now it's time for change.
"However many traditional Conservative supporters are unconvinced by David Cameron and particularly by George Osborne.
"I've been delighted that so many local people have asked to join my team of volunteers. We do not have the large amounts of money supplied by Ashcroft to the local Tories or the money donated by Trade Unions to the Labour party. We are all volunteers but we are ready for the most important election in the local party's history and are confident we will do well.
