Graham Oakes the Liberal Democrat Candidate for Exeter has thanked his supporters.
"Thank you very much to everyone who voted Liberal Democrat on Thursday. Those of you who supported us in the Pennsylvania city council by-election elected Tim Payne - a fine addition to the Lib Dem group.
"I fought a campaign to try to change the corrupt political system and received the backing of thousands of fair minded people across the city. It was a campaign based on hope - hope to create a fairer society, fairer taxes, fairer chances in education, fairer treatment of older people and a fairer political system. In the end the tactics of fear used by my opponents prevailed, with many people deciding at the last moment they couldn't risk voting Lib Dem.
"Only the Liberal Democrats will reform the political system. Labour promised to do it in 1997 but 13 years later we still have a system where 6.6M people who voted Lib Dem get a fifth of the representation that is given to the 8.3M who voted Labour.
"The fight for fairness goes on"
