There seems to be a new headline everyday on how the Conservatives are failing our waterways.

In water poollution and across sectors, the government has increasingly limited data.

"If we control the data, then you can't know how big the problem is "

To add to this, data uncovered by the Lib Dems show now 1 in 10 bathing area sewage monitors are broken or missing, more than 100! This stat rises to a shocking 30% for South West Water.

In the pockets of big developers, Gove is giving them the green light to pollute our rivers. In blatant disregard of their already dire state & breaking promises in the process. This does nothing to build social housing that is also urgently needed.

Events are frequently cancelled across the country due to raw sewage discharges, or face sickening consequences. A North Devon swim was cancelled this week as a direct result of South West Water dumping.

Then today’s headline shows even on dry days water companies illegally discharge sewage for thousands of hours, including on the hottest day on record (+40ºC). Toxic for nature and just when many people went to cool off in rivers. Will the punishment even be stronger than the crime?

People's pockets have been drained for big bonuses and exorbitant shareholder profits. This money should instead lower bills and be properly re-invested to upgrade our ageing sewer system.

The water industry has shown its need for major reform.

Lib Dems will:
🔸replace OFWAT with a tougher, stronger regulator
🔸ban the bonuses and place a sewage tax on profits
🔸make water firms public benefit companies.

This better holds the sector to account with proper incentives to invest in infrastructure and lower bills.

The Conservatives have their heads in the sand. They need to get a grip and start showing some leadership, or just get it over with and call a General Election now.

It is undeniable major structural change is required now for the sake of nature, the climate, and so we can enjoy our waterways once more.
