Promising results in Exeter last night

Will Aczel hearing Exeter's count results

In the early hours of Friday morning and after a great campaign, the General Election results for Exeter were announced. With pre-election polling averages predicting Lib Dems would get 4% of the vote in Exeter, I was so pleased to receive over 10%!

Getting over double the vote share than was expected from was one thing. But being within 5% of placing 2nd from a standing start in a historically Labour seat shows the strength of feeling here - for an MP who will stand up for Exeter.

Labour's vote share dropped a whopping 9.5% compared to the last General Election. And that's without mentioning that it happened within the context of a national landslide for Labour.

Exeter is a free-thinking and progressive city that I am proud to call home. It has been an honour to be your Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate and receive so much support. Thank you to the 4,201 people who voted for me yesterday, and to everyone who voted. Onto the next fight!

I congratulate Labour on their victory. I also look forward to Exeter citizens' verdict on their term in office, as Lib Dems continue to make the case for a more liberal, progressive, and transformative government.

Lib Dems are well and truly back across the Westcountry. Devon has returned six Lib Dem MPs, and sixteen across Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and Dorset!

Across the country, Lib Dems have surpassed 70 seats - our highest ever!
