Wake-up Call for Local and National Government
With temperatures exceeding 40°C for the first time in the UK last week, extreme weather events becoming more frequent and intense, and inflation surpassing 9%: this should be a wake-up call to local and national government to take robust climate action sooner rather than later. These are some of the key things they need to step up on:
➡️insulation helps keep houses cool in the summer as well as warm in the winter, saving money on energy bills.
➡️rising fuel prices have been caused by the rising price of fossil fuels, not green levies. Tax breaks and subsidies for fossil fuels still outweigh those for clean energy (Energy Policy Tracker). This needs to change.
➡️long-overdue recycling can help save us money, time and the environment by reducing frequent or onerous trips to bottle banks and boosting our recycling rate. Food waste can be utilised to generate both energy and fertiliser.
