Shockingly high rent at Exeter Labour's discounted co-living
Not only do Labour give a discount to 'co-living', but it still lacks clear policy standards.
Exeter has suffered the highest rent increase in England in the last 5 years, up 39%. Will Exeter Labour blame the Tories for this too?
At the same time, Exeter’s wages have struggled and cost-of-living pressures persist. Exeter rent now requires almost half average earnings.
Following Exeter Lib Dem pressure, Labour reviewed their developer levy policy. They used to give a 50% discount to student developers! Now, they want to give an even bigger discount for ‘co-living’ bedsits - unaffordable student blocks in another name. Revenue is still not being properly redistributed to our communities, and is instead squandered on city centre vanity projects.
Along with our Progressive Group colleagues, we are campaigning for these developer levies to incentivise building mix of homes that don’t cost the Earth.
We're also calling for Article 4 to be extended, where only up to 20% of streets in the scheme can be council tax exempt. Along with better enforcement, this will prevent the unsustainable spread of student HMOs that come at the expense of homes for locals.
Instead of Brownfield sites, Exeter Labour continue to prioritise greenfield sites for development that often lack supporting infrastructure and design-in car-dependence.
