Exeter Lib Dems have launched a petition for a public consultation on Labour's rubbish cuts.
Labour-run Exeter City Council have recklessly squandered public finances. This includes tens of millions of taxpayers' money on St Sidwell's Point and Exeter City Living. Therefore, they are now making cuts to already inadequate basic services like street cleansing. This is being cut by 15% (£237,000), with a quarter of litter and dog poo bins being removed.
Failure to hold a consultation on cutting service levels falls short of Exeter City Council's own Consultation Charter. This states: "We will consult residents and other stakeholders whenever a decision will directly affect them and when they might have a reasonable expectation that they should be involved." "Examples of consultations are... proposals to change our services e.g. closure of toilets, opening hours, service levels." Additionally, many bins have already been removed despite the fact "consultation must happen before the decision is made."
Will Aczel, Lib Dem Parliamentary Candidate for Exeter, said:
"I pick up a piece of litter everyday on my dog walk in Exeter. It's never difficult to find some. Labour's response to rampant litter on our streets? Cut the street cleansing services.
"Exonians want a city we can be proud of. But since bins are already on the sparse side, Labour are making our streets even dirtier.
"We need a public consultation. People should have a right to get a say over their local area and Labour need to understand the impacts of their cuts. Are Labour too afraid of what the public might say? Raise your voice by signing my petition."
